Jeeva Jyothi is a unique organization that has been working on behalf of children, women, unorganised workers and youth, as well as on ecology and environmental issues, since 1994. We focus on empowerment and education for our constituents through a variety of programmes, provide shelter for children in need, and offer a wide range of training and outreach activities.

Jeeva Jyothi accepts support from individuals as well as for-profit and not-for-profit organisations – anyone who is interested in Jeeva Jyothi’s mission and activities.

[-] What kinds of support does Jeeva Jyothi need?

You can support us from anywhere in the world by making financial contributions or in-kind donations. You can provide contributions directly to pay for food, clothing, educational supplies and health care for the children in our shelter home. You also can work with us as a volunteer; contribute technical and non-technical support; or provide training in one of our training programmes, in written and spoken English, or in computer and other needs-based training. Jeeva Jyothi also seeks people who can make connections to donors, the corporate sector and other fund raising programmes.

[-] What kind of training programmes do you offer?

We offer training on the rights of, and legal issues surrounding, women, children, and unorganised labour. We also provide training in job readiness, personality development, leadership development, counseling, team building, mediation, health and environmental issues, and yoga.

[-] How can I donate or sponsor a child?

Jeeva Jyothi accepts both cash and in-kind donations. The easiest way of donating money within India is by Direct Deposit Cheque or Money Order made payable to JEEVA JYOTHI, payable at Chennai.

You can apply to be a Service and Student Volunteer by sending your profile to us via e-mail, to contact@jeevajyothi.org or by filling out the online volunteer form. Volunteers serve for 1-6 months. Please provide the following information:

If you are accepted as a volunteer, please confirm to us at least one week before your arrival/start date.  We will provide room and board for volunteers coming from outside Chennai; the cost is approximately U.S. $200 per month.

[-] What I can learn from Jeeva Jyothi?

You can learn the reality of the situation of the children, women, youth, and unorganised workers. You can also learn strategy and methodology, particularly, Discovery through Yoga (soul searching method), Varma, and Meditation. You can also learn folks arts like Silambattam, Paraiyattam, Oyilattam, Karakattam, Kaliyal Attam, Kalari, Chakkai Kutchi Attam, Street Play, Awareness Song, Documentary film, and other topics.

[-] What is Jeeva Jyothi’s vision of the future?

  • There will be the elimination of child labour and protection of childrens’ rights; all children will stay in school up to their 18th year, with free and compulsory education for every child.

  • All the youth should be given vocational training and unemployment benefit from the government.

  • All unorganised workers should get at least minimum or survival salary according to the Minimum Wages Act.

  • There will be gender balance and equity in our society.

  • People and nature will exist in harmony to establish a peaceful society and environment.

  • Ethics and spirituality will drive human development

Jeeva Jyothi seeks all of these goals through service provision, lobbying and advocacy. In addition, we will undertake specific projects in support of these goals, including:

  • The promotion of organic food and organic farming, and eco-tourism for Indians and foreigners alike.
    Provision of different types of training in our Jeeva Jyothi Life Promotion Centre, including human resource development (for jobs and training).

  • Operation as a research and resource centre on childrens’, women’s and workers’ issues for student and volunteers.

  • Operation of a hand-made paper unit which manufactures items for local sale and export through the fair trade market.

  • Manufacture of handicraft items to promote in the foreign market.

We continue to seek more government-funded projects and schemes in support of our goals, and will pursue networking opportunities with like-minded NGOs, individuals, educational institutions as well.
