To make possible enrollment of these children in normal
schools the cooperation of their mothers was needed. Thus
gradually the women in different areas were formed in to
women’s associations. Their focus gradually changed from
monitoring their wards in to over all development of women
and the community. Various projects in North Chennai helped
in the reduction of child labour. Jeeva Jyothi moved on to
the neighboring Thiruvallur district. Working with the
children in this area. We Stumbled
upon the existence of bonded (forced) labour particularly in
the rice mills and Brick kilns. Our intervention to better
their conditions of these workers and their families lead us
to organizing the unorganized and peripheral workers.
To uplift the socio economic condition of the community we
serve. Jeeva Jyothi started a Hand Paper unit at Kosappur.
Thiruvallur District. This project is aimed at providing
financial sustainability to Jeeva Jyothi in the future.
Experience in recycling and production of hand made paper
taught us the need to take up the question of preserving the
environment.
